Learn to Swim

Our Philosophy:

Learning to swim is a pro-active measure to help children gain water confidence and confidence generally.

Our program encourages all children to progress at his/her own pace within a safe learning environment.

Our Aims:

    • To provide an environment where young children feel emotionally comfortable.

    • To improve children’s knowledge of the water by teaching them successful survival and
      water safety skills.

    • To enhance the abilities of all children by introducing them to higher-level skill sets when
they are physically and mentally capable of achieving aquatic progression.

    • To encourage a love of swimming and physical exercise through engaged play and drills.

Levels:

Water babies

Accompanied by a parent, babies are introduced to the water for familiarisation through fun activities and learning through play.

This can be a valuable and positive interaction time for mother and baby. Starting at 6 months, lessons are held daily except for Sunday.

Tadpole Pink

For children 2 years and under 4 years, the teacher will gradually replace the parent as a support with the majority of children taking their first direction from the teacher.

The class focus is still familiarisation of the water and experimentation with preparatory skills initialising base swimming positions and kicking.

Safety turns and entries are core skills of this group.

Tadpole Red

For children 3 years and up and who are confident in the water.

Preparatory freestyle and backstroke are taught allowing greater independence while completing a variety of higher complex tasks.

Level 1 Green

Children are now moving toward independent freestyle and backstroke swimming and are able to complete a competent dive.

Most children in this group are 4 and above, they are now able to retain more information and could be considered ”safe in the water”.

Level 1 Yellow

Entering the main pool children will first be acclimatized to the new environment and finally become confident with deep-water swimming.

More technical freestyle and backstroke drills will be worked to gain aerobic fitness.

Breaststroke and butterfly kick will be attempted and initial tumble turns will be introduced.

Level 2 Orange & Blue

The orange group is for 5-7 year olds and blue for 7 years and above.

The outcomes are the same for both groups. Complete breaststroke is the main aim of this group but underlying this is a significant gain in aerobic capacity and speed play.

Higher-level drills and the introduction of butterfly kick and stroke are also attempted.

Level 3 Purple

The aim of this group is to prepare children for squad training or to finalise their learn to swim program. Butterfly will be completed having prepared with butterfly kick from previous groups.

Lane etiquette, group sharing and participation will be encouraged.

Aerobic fitness, speed drills and competition practices will be substantially increased. Children completing this group should safely graduate to the bronze squad or nippers life saving.

All teachers are Austswim accredited or have obtained ASCTA coaching accreditation and regularly attend industry development workshops.
